Leave of absence
If you plan for a leave of absence or a break from you studies, you must apply to UiB. Your documented leave of absence or break from studies will then be registered in your individual education plan.
Main content
Students enrolled in a full degree (bachelor, master or profesional study) at the University of Bergen may apply for leave of absence. If you are a guest student, exchange student or an external candidate, you do not have the right to a leave of absence from your studies.
Break from studies
Students in bachelor's programs, integrated master's programs and professional studies have the right to take a break from studies for one or two semesters without giving any reason. You cannot apply for a break from your studies for less than one semester.
When you are on a break from your studies, you do not pay the semester fee or update your individual education plan. You will not be able to take any exams.
Please note that if you are a student enrolled in a one-year programme, you cannot apply for a break from your studies, but you can apply for a leave of absence for medical or parental reasons, as well as other extenuating circumstances.
The application deadlines are: 1 September (for fall semester) and 1 February (for spring semester)
Documented Leave of Absence
You can apply to for a documented leave of absence if you fullfil one of the following requirements:
- Extenuating circumstances
- Mandatory conscription
- Full-time positions in student organizations or the like
- Maternity or paternity leave
There is no deadline for a documented leave of absence, but you must submit your application as soon as possible.
