Welcome Programme August 2024

Stay tuned for UiB's autumn semester Welcome Programme 2024. The programme will introduce you to different aspects of being a student in Bergen.

Joining the programme is an excellent opportunity to meet other international students, as well as ask questions to UiB staff members. Attendance is not mandatory, but we highly encourage all new international students to participate. 

Welcome and Introduction

We will hold an introduction meeting for new international students in the auditorium Egget at the Student Centre. Address: Parkveien 1. We have devided you into three groups depending on which faculty you will be studying at.

In addition to receiving practical information, you will meet a Norwegian student, learn more about the Student Welfare organisation Sammen and how to hike safely in the Norwegian nature. The programme will last approximately 3 hours. 

Meet your Faculty

All faculty meetings will be held on Friday, 9 August. The time will vary depending on which faculty you belong to. We will link to the faculty page below as soon as the details are updated.

Welcome Week - Monday, 12 August to Friday, 16. August

On Monday, 12 August at 10 am we celebrate the beginning of a new academic year for all new and established students and staff. The Welcome Cermony will take place on campus at Muséplass. 

There will also be different activities for new students during the Welcome Week. You will receive detailed information directly from your faculty before the semester starts.

Social activities open for all students

In addition, there are several social activities open for all students.

Outdoor cinema - Wednesday 14 August


Wednesday evening at 22:00 you can experience Bergen in a completely new way. Sit down on the lawn outside the Geophysical Institute (Allégaten 70) and enjoy a movie on a large screen, with Mount Ulrikken and the lake Store Lungegårdsvann in the background. The film is in English and is shown in collaboration with the Bergen International Film Festival (BIFF).

Entrance opens at 21:30. Remember to dress according to weather. As the ground may become moist in the evening, it can be a good idea to bring a seating pad or blanket. No snack service, so bring your own popcorn.

Student organisations on stand in Grieghallen - Thursday 15 August


The student welfare organisation Sammen is holding a student organisation fair Thursday, 15 August. Pop by Grieghallen between 10:00 and 17:00 to see if you can find a student organisation to join! Here you have a unique chance to find out what you want to do in your spare time during your stay in Bergen. You can talk to, ask questions and get to know the student organisations in Bergen.

Hallaien student concert - Friday 16 August


As a spectacular ending to the Welcome Week. All students in Bergen are invited to a large outdoor concert at Koengen on Friday, 16 August! Find link to tickets in MittUiB from the beginning of August.

Open house at the student house Kvarteret - Saturday 17 August


Saturday between 12:00 end 16:00, Kvarteret, Bergen's largest student house, invites you to join in on your favorite activity - or try something completely new! Quiz and yoga will begin 30 minutes after the doors open. Yoga lasts approximately 1 hour and starts again after a short break until closing time. The other actvities takes place throughout the opening hours.

Drop in and choose between silent disco, yoga, speed friending, quiz and karaoke, among other things.

Fløyen mountain hike - Sunday 18 August


Join an organized mountain hike to mount Fløyen on Sunday 18 August. This is a good opportunity to get to know the hiking possibilities in Bergen, as well as other students. Remember hiking shoes and to dress according to weather.

Meet at Fløyen funicular station in the city centre at 13:00. Return at approx. 16:00.

Exhibition on artificial intelligence - From Tuesday 13 August


What do you think about the future of artificial intelligence? Is technology our friend or enemy? See the exhibition "Ambivalent intelligens" (Ambivalent intelligence) at the University Museum. It was created by 23 bachelor students at Media City Bergen. The exhibition is open at 10:00 – 16:00 Tuesdays to Saturdays and at 11:00 – 17:00 Sundays all semester. Entry is free for students at UiB.

Find your student organisation - Thursday 22 August

You will get to know the student organisations that recruit international students. Also, Sammen Studentliv will offer advice on how to make the most of your time as a student. Free food will be served at the event.
