Note: The course will have two mandatory gatherings:

  1. 28 April, 10:00-14:00
  2. 30 April, 09:00-14:00

 

Writing a synopsis for an article-based PhD thesis requires a meta-reflection. In this course, the aim is not only for the candidate to learn how to structure and write the synopsis but also to reflect on how research, science, communication, and art can contribute to formative education. 

After completing the course, the PhD candidates will know about: 

  • identifying the purpose of the synopsis in an article-based PhD thesis
  • applying the Norwegian qualification framework (NQF), level 8 (3rd circle)
  • applying the guidelines of the synopsis
  • positioning the synopsis in the state-of-the-art
  • achieving coherence in the synopsis
  • presenting the synopsis in a transparent way convey findings in the synopsis

By completing the course, the PhD candidates will have completed the following learning aims, which are here defined as knowledge, skills, and general competence: 

Knowledge

The candidate:   

  • is familiar with writing the synopsis in an article-based PhD thesis.  
  • knows what purposes the synopsis has in an article-based PhD thesis.  
  • knows what elements a synopsis consists of at a doctoral level.   
  • is familiar with relevant national and institutional guidelines for the article-based matrixes and tools for assessing, sorting, and presenting the different elements of the synopsis.

Skills  

The candidate:   

  • can write a synopsis coherently and transparently.   
  • can apply national and institutional guidelines for an article-based PhD thesis.   
  • can compare and evaluate different views on academic writing as an art.  
  • can reflect on how their research has contributed to their formative education.    

General competence  

The candidate:   

  • can understand the purpose of the synopsis in an article-based PhD thesis, 
  • can evaluate and conceptualizes the required elements in a synopsis 
  • can compose a complex synopsis.
