Location: Bergen

About the institution:

The CMI-UiB Centre on Law and Social Transformation – LawTransform – is a global research centre based in Bergen, focusing on the role of law and courts in processes of social change. The centre was established in 2014 as a collaboration between the Chr. Michelsen Institute (CMI) and the University of Bergen (UiB), where it is co-owned by the faculties of Law and Social Sciences. It is physically based at Bergen Global, in Jekteviksbakken 31.

Legal strategies, including taking cases to court, is increasingly used by activists to advance goals such as indigenous rights, climate transformation, abortion, queer rights, social justice, and democracy. Through international and interdisciplinary research projects, LawTransform researchers investigate how these legal strategies work under different conditions. Other projects explore how autocratic governments use the law to stay in power; how courts, truth commissions and other legal institutions work under different circumstances; and conditions for children’s participation in legal processes. Insights from the research form the basis for innovative and research-based courses at all levels, from BA to PhD. LawTransform also hosts a range of conferences and events, including the Bergen Exchanges on Law & Social Transformation, an annual week-long conference where scholars, practitioners, and students from around the globe engage in dialogue.
