Dr. Beth Whelan

Dr. Beth Whelan is a registered psychologist, associate professor and training director at Memorial University Student Health and Wellness Centre in St. John’s NL. Beth is cross appointed to the faculties of Psychology, Medicine & Community Health and Professional Education. She is a certified Mindful Medical Practice teacher (January 2019) through the University of Rochester medical school. Beth teaches mindful practice to both undergraduate and graduate students within the faculties of psychology and medicine. Her clinical and research interests include the role of emotion (e.g. shame) in health education faculties, mindfulness for clinician wellness and resilience, motivational stages of change theory and interpersonal psychotherapy. Dr. Whelan has ongoing research collaborations with Dr. Edvin Schei at the University of Bergen, in Bergen Norway, where they are investigating the role of emotion in medical education and will develop a curriculum to assist physicians and medical learners in understanding the importance and impact of emotion within teaching, learning and clinical encounters.

Donald Boudreau

DONALD BOUDREAU, MD, is a Faculty Member in the Institute of Health Sciences Education and a recently retired respirologist/pulmonologist. He has been involved in medical education, at both undergraduate and graduate levels, for over 30 years. At the undergraduate level, he has held numerous leadership posts including that of Associate Dean, Medical Education and Student Affairs. Dr. Boudreau is an Arnold P. Gold Professor of Medicine. The Arnold P. Gold Foundation is dedicated to humanism in medicine. Dr. Boudreau is also an adjunct professor at The University of Notre Dame Australia, School of Medicine, Sydney.

Dr. Boudreau co-chairs the McGill Research in Medical Education (McRIME) committee. This committee overseas scientific peer reviews of proposals in health sciences education research conducted at McGill. He is involved in teaching professionalism and aspects of the clinical method at the undergraduate level and participates actively in the administration of a mentorship program for medical students. He has authored or co-authored over 50 peer reviewed articles or book chapters and is co-author of ‘Physicianship and the Rebirth of Medical Education’ published by Oxford University Press and released in 2018. Current research interests: Clinical wisdom and phronesis.
