Language Contact and the development of Italian
Alessandro Carlucci is studying the impact that contact with other languages has had on the historical development of the Italian language, from its earliest stages to the present. He is a new postdoctoral research fellow at the Department of Foreign Languages.

Alessandro Carlucci obtained his first degree from the University of Siena and holds a PhD from the University of London. He has taught at several Italian and British institutions, including the University of Exeter and the University of Oxford. From 2017 to 2019 he worked as a Research Associate on the Creative Multilingualism project at the Faculty of Medieval and Modern Languages, University of Oxford.
Linguistic History
His research focuses on the history of the Italian language, language contact, multilingualism, translation, sociolinguistics and the history of linguistic ideas. He also works on Italian cultural and intellectual history. His articles have appeared in journals such as Language Sciences, Cahiers Ferdinand de Saussure, Rivista italiana di dialettologia, Zeitschrift für romanische Philologie, Lingua nostra, Belfagor, Studi storici, Journal of Romance Studies and Modern Language Review.
Gramsci
He is the author of The Impact of the English Language in Italy: Linguistic Outcomes and Political Implications (Lincom, 2018) and Gramsci and Languages: Unification, Diversity, Hegemony (Brill, 2013; Haymarket, 2015), which was awarded the Giuseppe Sormani International Prize (2017).
Carlucci will be a postdoctoral research fellow at the University of Bergen from 2019 to 2024.
