Is there such a thing as a Nordic legal culture or is this narrative just a myth? How can the concept of a Nordic legal culture be used as an analytical lens?

The Research Group for Legal Culture, Legal History and Comparative Law at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen, are pleased to announce that a Conference on Nordic Legal Culture will be held from 1 to 2 June 2023 at the University of Bergen, Norway.

This conference is the starting point of biannual series of conferences hosted by different institutions and research groups in cooperation with, and supported by, the Norwegian Society of Comparative Law.

The research group wish to include other institutions in the Nordics to the very first conference on comparative law, that engages with the questions of whether there is such a thing as a Nordic legal culture.

The conference will provide a unique opportunity to meet international experts on comparative law and judges from different countries. PhD candidates are invited to present their projects or simply attend (More info in programme).

Ph.D. presentations

Call for papers for PhD candidates:

  • PhD candidates wishing to present (a selected aspect) of their work are invited to submit an abstract of 250 words, a CV, the name(s) of the advisors and a brief presentation of the overall topic of the PhD project to Professor Anna Nylund (anna.nylund@uib.no) or Professor Sören Koch (soren.koch@uib.no). The deadline for submissions is Wednesday 3 May 2023.

Norwegian Society for Comparative Law

Prior to the Conference the Norwegian Society of Comparative Law invites Norwegian and Nordic scholars interested in comparative law and comparative legal studies to join the open assembly of the society on the afternoon of the 31 May 2023.
