Fault sealing and fluid contact control in Gullfaks and Gullfaks Sør

Hovedinnhold

Project description
Sealing of bouyant fluids in the subsurface is a requirement for underground storage of CO2 as well as of trapping of oil and gas. Data analyses of such sealing come largely from the oil and gas industry. Two of the most important processes that influence sealing of bouyant fluids are across-fault sealing and along-fault leakage.

The (pre production) fluid contacts vary significantly across the Gullfaks Sør field, but significantly less across the shallower Gullfaks Field.
This master project will perform an in-depth analyses of fluid contact differences across these two fields. The aim is to derive generic relationships between fault sealing and parameters such as fault strike and throw, clay smearing, burial
depth, and times of reactivation.

The thesis work will include an integrated analysis of fluid contact controls, including analyses of seismic, pore pressure and organic geochemistry data. Seismic data and interpretations will be made available from Equinor, and the student will be given the opportunity to present results for and get feedback from Equinor geoscientists.

Proposed course plan during the master's degree (60 ECTS):
SDG207 (10)
GEOV272 (10)
GEOV274 (10)
GEOV352 (5)
GEOV261 (10)
GEOV251 (10)
and AG344 (5) (UNIS)

The course plan can be adjusted to the student, according to background and interest.
