The toxic relationship between salmon louse and Atlantic salmon

Remember having lice when you were a child? How it scratches and feels uncomfortable? Atlantic salmon and other fish can have lice too, reducing their health and creating stress. In this event researchers from UiB will present the toxic relationship between salmon louse and Atlantic salmon, and show how understanding the fundamental biology of this parasite can help creating new ways to protect salmon against it.

About the event (held in English)

The toxic relationship between salmon louse and Atlantic salmon
Remember having lice when you were a child? How it scratches and feels uncomfortable? Atlantic salmon and other fish can have lice too, scratching them too, eating their mucus, skin and blood. While not being directly deadly for the fish, salmon louse damage to salmon skin can favor secondary disease development, and affect fish welfare by increasing their level of stress.

Salmon louse is a big challenge for both farmed and wild salmon and the means to fight it are costly and limited, necessitating often several rounds of treatment per production cycle to maintain salmon louse levels low. In this talk, we will present the toxic relationship between salmon louse and Atlantic salmon, and we will show how understanding the fundamental biology of this parasite can help creating new ways to protect salmon against it, notably by developing a vaccine based on salivary gland and filament proteins.
