"Visualization for Communication"

This is a trial lecture linked with the recruitment into a tenure track position in Visualization.

Abstract:

In our era of digitalization, with an overwhelming amount of information competing for our attention, visualizations are a proven way to catch our eye and encourage us to pause in our scrolling. Through innate perceptual cues, visualizations often can communicate information faster than words. However, good visualization design is both a science and an art. Poorly designed visualizations can mislead or outright lie to us. Successful visualizations for communication require good design practices, respect for the complexity of the data and the intended audience, and often tell a story. This lecture will discuss two foundational aspects of visualization for communication: design and storytelling. Beginning with a discussion of strategies and considerations for designing visuals in service of communication, we will then build on this foundation for a deeper dive into current research in narrative visualization to tell data-driven medical stories.
