Mercy Gitonga

Mercy Gitonga is doing a master's by research in social anthropology at the University of Johannesburg.  She has previously researched Ethiopian food spaces in Nairobi; seeking to understand how Ethiopian migrants in Nairobi use restaurants and cuisine to forge a sense of community and belonging, and navigate life in the city. Personal stories and narratives that emerged from this research, particularly Ethiopians’ accounts of their migration journeys through Nairobi, inspired her to look into the transnational migrations of Ethiopians transiting via Kenya to South Africa.  Read about her project here.

Peter Krohn-Hansen 

Peter Krohn-Hansen is a second-year master's student in human geography at the University of Bergen. He has previously spent one semester as an exchange student at the University of Ghana, which has helped shape his interest in how different dimensions of informality and urbanization characterize urban development in many parts of the world today. Ernest Teye Ayumu

Ernest Teye is a first-year M. Phil student at the Department of Geography and Resource Development, University of Ghana. His research interests are urbanisation and urban development, particularly focusing on urban housing policies and public housing governance. Read about his project here.

Lukas Siegfried Hoose

Lukas is a master student in the Geographies of Sustainable Development program at the University of Bergen. During his Bachelor's degree at the University of Bonn, he developed a strong interest in the fields of urban development with a special focus on mobility and transportation. As well as looking at how the modes of transportation impact the physical urban space, he is interested in how peoples' movement shapes the urban society. Read about his project here.

Maria Fallmyr Hansen

Maria completed her MA degree in spring 2020. 

Maria is a master student of Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. During her bachelor's degree, she did an exchange semester at Makerere University in Kampala, Uganda. In the spring of 2018, she conducted fieldwork at the outskirts of Kampala. Among others, her fields of interest include gender, political and urban anthropology. Read about her project here.

Mikko Virtanen

Mikko completed his MA degree in spring 2020. 

Mikko is enrolled in the master's programme in Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen. During his bachelor's degree, he lived for five months in Cape Town for an exchange semester. Also, for another semester he lived and studied developmental studies in Ghana. Mikko is interested in migration and how to best solve the issues surrounding refugees. In the spring of 2019, he conducted fieldwork in Northern Uganda.

Anna Koksvik Thorsen

Anna completed her MA degree in fall 2020.

Anna completed her master's degree in Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen in 2020. In the spring of 2019, she conducted fieldwork at the outskirts of Cape Town, South Africa.

Lauritz Isaksen

Lauritz completed his MA degree in spring 2019.

Lauritz completed his master's degree in Social Anthropology at the University of Bergen in the spring of 2019. He conducted fieldwork about urban enclaving near Accra, Ghana in the spring of 2018. His main interests include the transformation of social space and how people are affected by this in terms of conflict/cooperation and in the formation of meaning. As well as looking at how people socially and culturally change, he is also interested in how people from different class backgrounds conceptualise visionary futures.
