Accommodation and UiB Guesthousing

Who can book accommodation?  The department or UiB unit affiliated with the guest researcher or new international employee can make reservations using the electronic application.

When and for how long?  Housing is offered for stays from 3 weeks to six months, with a maximum of 6 months pre-booking. If there is free capacity, and at short notice, other guests at UiB may also apply for housing for 3 weeks to 1 month.

How to book? UiB affiliated department/faculty can book accommodation through our online electronic application form. This is only available through UiB network or VPN. Billing information must be provided upon booking.

Cancellations must be made at least four weeks before the scheduled arrival date, or a cancellation fee equivalent to one month's rent will apply.

A fee may apply if you terminate before the end of the contract. A four-week notice period is required.

Make sure you have all your personal belongings, and do not leave food items in the kitchen.

Leave the keycard on the desk/table. 

It is important, necessary and free to update your address with the following:

• National Registry Moving - The Norwegian Tax Administration (skatteetaten.no)
• Self-service portal  automatically updates to the address in the National Registry (check that it has)
• Notify us of change of address when moving - Posten.no/en

Sometimes you need to update your new address directly with some providers, like phone companies. 
Smart tip here is that once your banking is set up, register invoices you receive as e-invoice or Autogiro. 

Always use your personal email for contact with public offices, never your UiB email.

When renting private housing there are a few things you need to be aware of.

• Contract: Always make sure you get full contact information for the property owner.
• Ensure that you carefully read and understand your tenancy agreement, particularly regarding the type of agreement and its duration. Early termination of a rental contract may result in fees and additional costs. 
• Familiarize yourself with tenant duties in the contract and what is expected of you as tenant.

• According to the Tenancy Act, housing deposit should never be paid into a private account, but rather into a separate bank account in your name, usually set up by the property owner in their bank of choice. This account should always require 2 signatures (yours and theirs) to withdraw. To sign and make a deposit a Norwegian BankID is required.
  Contact housing@uib.no for options if you do not have your norwegian BankID.  
• Home content insurance protects your valuables, such as furniture, sports equipment, clothes and electronic devises. This insurance covers damage to belongings in the event of fire, water damage, burglary etc. This can be purchased through your Norwegian trade union, your bank, or insurance companies in Norway.
