Abstract
EU launched An EU Strategy to harness the potential of offshore renewable energy for a climate neutral future, with the subtitle Offshore renewable energy for a climate-neutral Europe in November 2021.
Offshore renewable energy is a story of undisputed European technological and industrial leadership: European laboratories and industries are rapidly developing a range of other technologies to harness the power of our seas for producing green electricity, from floating offshore wind2, to ocean energy technologies such as wave or tidal, floating photovoltaic installations and the use of algae to produce biofuels.
Offshore wind energy is at the heart of the European Green Deal. The current goal of at least 60 GW installed offshore wind in 2030 in EU waters calls for a massive effort from industry and authorities. Regional cooperation and good marine spatial planning are needed in order to minimize area conflicts and provide Europe with enough offshore renewable energy.
Norway has very good wind resources and a need for new business opportunities for our petroleum industry. EU’s offshore renewable strategy poses great opportunities for Norway, but there is so far not a clear strategy on how to utilize these opportunities.
