Hovedinnhold

"The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in all SapienCE scientists having to rethink and adapt their research plans for 2020 and beyond into 2021. However, despite the challenges I am happy to report that our swift mitigatory actions resulted in several positive outcomes," Christopher Henshilwood, director of SapienCE says.

The SapienCE team were partially successful with the planned fieldwork programmes in South Africa although the excavations at Blombos Cave and a geological coastal survey had to be cancelled. Better news is that a 3-week experimental archaeology programme at Jongensfontein was successful, as was the collection of speleothems at Bloukrans.

"A highlight was the drilling of two 40m marine cores from the research vessel, Marion Dufresne off the coast near Blombos and Klasies. The speleothems and cores are now being analysed in Bergen", Henshilwood says.

The annual report  includes a selection of stories based on our 2020 activities and scientific work with the goal of further understanding when, how and why our species first behaved in a modern way.
