Unified flash calculations with isenthalpic and isochoric constraints

The recently published paper presents a general methodology to compute fluid phase equilibria, with persistent unknowns and general state definitions. It represents a major step towards consistent compositional flow simulation under local equilibrium assumptions.

Simulation of multiphase multicomponent flow with phase change demands great flexibility, efficiency, and compatibility of the thermodynamic subproblem. Complex phenomena in the subsurface require models for multiple properties of the fluid, including volume, enthalpy, or internal energy, in a thermodynamically consistent manner. This must be combined with a suitable mathematical approach for appearing and disappearing phases. The paper uses the unified formulation of the phase equilibrium problem with a persistent set of unknowns and extends the methodology to cover general equilibria states. This general, unified flash presents a modular way to include and couple the local fluid phase equilibrium with the flow and transport model.
