My current research is focused on the evolution of the nervous system complexity and the developmental role of lineage-restricted genes. In my talk, I will share our most recent findings on the role of non-conserved genes in the individuation of neuronal types in the freshwater polyp Hydra. I will demonstrate how we use phylogenomic analysis, single-cell transcriptomics, machine learning tools, and functional genetics approaches to gain insights into the evolutionary assembly of the neuronal machinery in the Cnidaria lineage. I will discuss the implications of these findings in the context of the nervous system evolution in Metazoa.
