Cadmium in the local environment

The Research group for Occupational and Environmental Medicine, University of Bergen has in cooperation with Boliden AS examined whether the population closest to the zinc factory in Odda has a higher level of cadmium and micro protein in the urine, than persons living in a less polluted area.

Hovedinnhold

During the last decades, environmental surveys of cadmium (Cd) in Odda, both in air, soil and moss have taken place. In certain residential areas, some soil samples showed higher values than what is recommended by the government. Boliden’s production of zinc has probably contributed to this contamination. Cadmium accumulates in the kidney cortex and has a toxic effect on kidney tubuli.
