Congenital Heart Disease and Environment Epidemiological Database - CHeartED

Cardiovascular malformation is the commonest cause of childhood death in developed countries. In the EU there are 51,000 new cases each year and two million affected individuals. Yet, despite intensive research, the cause of 80% of cardiovascular malformations remains elusive.

Hovedinnhold

The mission of CHeartED is to identify genetic and environmental pathways that can be modified with the goal of reducing preventable cardiovascular malformation incidence.

In Bergen we study interactions between genetic and environmental risk factors, such as diet or medications, for heart disease in children of mothers with diabetes. The aim is to identify risk factors, and reduce the harmful effect of these risk factors by the intake of for example supplements, just as supplementation of folic acid reduces the risk of spina bifida.
