EvoFish at the ICES conference
With fisheries-induced evolution in the spotlight, Bea, Fabian and Mikko from EvoFish attended the ICES Annual Science Conference

EvoFish was well represented during the Annual Science Conference of the International Council for the Exploration of the Sea (ICES), arranged in A Coruña (Galicia, Spain) last week. EvoFish came with a three strong crew and presented five talks and one poster, all in the theme session "Stocks in flux: From selection pressures via phenotypic and genetic adaptive responses to impacts on ecosystem services":
- Beatriz Diaz Pauli: Behavioural differences between experimental populations of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) that experienced size-selective fishing
- Beatriz Diaz Pauli: Phenotypic and genetic changes in life history traits in experimental populations of guppies (Poecilia reticulata) that experienced size-selective fishing
- Mikko Heino: Changes in age and size at maturation of Northeast Arctic cod are driven by the interplay between environmentally-induced phenotypic plasticity and fisheries-induced selection
- Mikko Heino: How strong is fisheries-induced selection? An assessment of selection differentials caused by fishing
- Mikko Heino: How strong is fisheries-induced selection? A general framework for estimating fisheries-induced selection differentials (poster)
- Fabian Zimmermann: Influence of gear selectivity on maturation evolution and yield
Twitter was popular during the conference, and one can find selected highlights with the hashtag #ICES_ASC - including many tweets from EvoFish.
Following similar theme sessions in 2002, 2006, and 2010, the theme session was the fourth one in series where fisheries-induced evolution has been one of the key topics. Perhaps another one will be arranged in 2018?
