Project title: Music therapy with asylum- and refugee children. A qualitative, explorative study on music therapy as a health promoting intervention

The project: This Ph.D. project explores the potential that music therapy can have as a health promoting and supportive intervention for asylum- and refugee children, as a part of their everyday life. Asylum- and refugee children are often in a vulnerable and demanding life situation, where access to support can be limited. There is a need to develop more knowledge about relevant supportive and health promoting interventions.

The research is situated in a primary school in Norway where asylum seeking- and refugee-children receives music therapy as a part of their school day. The research has an explorative design and uses qualitative methods. Data consists of individual and focus group interviews with children and teachers, and ethnographic data from music therapy sessions.

The Ph.D. is funded by Volda University College. 

 

Kaja Elise Åslid Enge is a music therapist, and lives in Volda with her husband and two children. She works as a Ph.D. candidate at Volda University College, and graduated as a music therapist from Aalborg University in 2008. The last years she has worked with asylum- and refugee children. She is interested in how music therapy as a part of the school day, can be a support for children in vulnerable life situations.
