Getting Around Calgary
AUArts will provide you with a bus pass. I highly recommend downloading the Calgary Transit app to your phone for easy access to bus and light rail schedules and tickets. The app also works for purchasing fares if you don't have your pass yet.
For getting around beyond public transportation, Calgary offers several options:
• Uber: A safe and affordable alternative to taxis.
• Rental Scooters and Bikes: A fun way to explore the city on a nice day (weather permitting!).

Packing Tips
Calgary has a dramatic four-season climate. Be sure to pack accordingly:
• Winter (Dec-Feb): Temperatures can drop as low as -50°C. Pack warm clothes, including a hat, scarf, gloves, and winter boots.
• Summer (June-Aug): Temperatures can climb to +40°C. Pack light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, and a hat.

Finances
Plan to spend a minimum of 120,000 NOK on travel, housing, and food for your stay. To ensure a comfortable experience, I recommend budgeting closer to 200,000-300,000 NOK.

Undervisningsformer

The Canadian grading system here uses letter grades from A to F. However, as an exchange student from Norway, you won't be subject to these grades! Your exchange program operates on a pass/fail basis, so your main focus should be successfully completing each course.
Here's what you can expect:
• Well-Organized Classes
• Supportive Professors
• Full-Time Schedule: Be prepared to spend most weekdays on campus, actively engaged in classwork. This will include a mix of in-class activities and group assignments.
• Clear Expectations: Especially in visual communication courses, you'll receive detailed briefs with specific instructions and expectations. Make sure to document your creative process for final presentations.
• No Remote Learning Options: In-person attendance is a key part of the learning experience here, so remote learning options are not typically available.

Vurdering av emnetilbodet

I had a good experience in the Visual Communication program. The courses were well-organized and engaging. Here's a heads-up for you:
• Course Selection: As an exchange student, you might have fewer courses to choose from compared to local students. This is because course registration opens earlier for local students, and spots can fill up quickly.
• Apply Early! To ensure you get the courses you're most interested in, apply for the exchange program as soon as possible.
You can find the full course listing for the courses on the AUArts website

Universitetsområdet og byen

The AUArts campus is designed with students in mind. It's a clean, smoke and drug free safe space where everything you need is close at hand:
• Centralized Resources: All your classes, student accommodations, and several restaurants are located within a 10-minute walk of each other, making campus life convenient.
• Easy Access to Downtown: A light rail station right on campus connects you directly to Calgary's downtown.
• Shopping Nearby: The North Hill shopping mall is conveniently located near campus.
• Beyond the campus, Calgary offers many entertainment options. Public transportation system is efficient enough. The multicultural nature of Canada lets you explore a diverse range of restaurants serving cuisines from around the world.

Bustad

There aren’t many housing options available in Calgary, I definitely recommend considering SAIT residence for your exchange at AUArts. Here's why:
• Convenience: Located close to campus, SAIT residence offers a convenient and comfortable living situation.
• Meal Plans Available: You'll have access to mediocre meals throughout the week. The 5-day plan includes unlimited snacks and extra meals, which you can store in your fridge. Just don’t tell them.
• Private Room, Shared Amenities: You'll have your own private bedroom for peace and quiet, while sharing kitchen and bathroom facilities with one other person. This is a great way to meet fellow students and create a sense of community.
Remember to research and apply for housing early, as spots can fill up quickly.
