OBITUARY FOR BJARNE RIEBER

Bjarne Rieber has been the Rieber family's representative on the Arboretum's board since his father died on February 6, 1978. Fritz C. Rieber initiated the Arboretum at Milde, and was strongly committed to its development. Bjarne Rieber inherited his father's interest in nature and gardens. Ever since it was established in 1971, the Arboretum has focused on rhododendrons, and has built up a unique collection of plants that together make up the largest collection in the Nordic region. He also established the Arboretum's Rhododendron Fund, which has made it possible to develop new plant collections and increase the expertise of Arboretum staff.

The Arboretum's rosarium has an exhibition of over 500 different roses, and there are important collections of conifers, heathers, species of the tea and magnolia families, dogwoods, Norwegian trees, and maples. In total, the Arboretum has 6,000 different species and cultivars.

Without Bjarne Rieber's commitment and financial support, we would not have this important collection and gem of a place today. Bjarne Rieber's extensive knowledge of plants, legislation and economics has contributed to the further development of the Arboretum and to the establishment of a unique place both on a national scale and internationally.

We are extremely grateful for the good and close cooperation over a number of years. Bjarne Rieber was always so pleasant, sociable, and dependable. Bjarne's death is both a painful and tangible loss for the Arboretum. He is remembered with respect and joy and through his lasting legacy. Bjarne Rieber, a benefactor and garden lover, and philanthropist of the best kind, has passed away. We send our warmest thoughts to his family.
