Rector portraits

Rector is the head of the University, according to UoB law "supreme head of the management, and spokesman for the university."

The portraits are made at the conclusion of each rector’s term in office. The artists are sometimes very different, and the portraits are consequently different in expression, but all are intended to be representative of the person in the office the Rector is leaving.

Henrik Sørensen: Bjørn Trumpy, 1954

Bjørn Trumpy (1900-1974) was a pioneer in particle physics, terrestrial magnetism and nuclear physics in Norway. He was the director of the Bergen Museum from 1943, and became the first Rector of the University of Bergen in 1948.

Erik Waaler (1903-1997) was one of two professors in medicine appointed when the University of Bergen was established, and he became the first Dean of the Faculty of Medicine.

Ludvig Holm-Olsen (1914-1990) was the first professor of Nordic philology at the University of Bergen, and the University's third Rector, from 1960 to -65.

Håkon Mosby (1903-1989) was a meteorologist. In 1927 he began as an assistant professor at the section for theoretical meteorology at the Geophysical Institute at Bergen Museum, which later became part of the University of Bergen.

Hans Olav Ottersen: Ørjar Øyen, 1983

Ørjar Øyen (1927-) was Professor of Sociology at the University of Bergen from 1968 to 1997, and is now Professor Emeritus. He has worked with ecology, diffusion and population issues, and in later years was increasingly involved in international cooperation and research.

Arnfinn Graue (1926-) is a nuclear physicist. He was Associate Professor at the University of Bergen from 1961, and from 1971 Professor of experimental nuclear physics.

Ole Didrik Lærum (1940-) was a professor of pathology at the University of Bergen until 2010. He has been active in cancer research, and has also made his mark as an educator, cultural historian and in university politics.

Jan Fridtjof Bernt (1943-) is Professor of Law. He became Rector of the University of Bergen in 1996, and could draw from previous experience such as Pro-rector from 1990 to -92, Vice Dean of the Faculty of Law 1988-89, and director of the Department of Public Law 1984-87.

Kirsti Koch Christensen (1940-) is a linguist, and since 1991 has been a Professor in Bergen, responsible for the Japanese studies. Before that, she was associate professor at both the University of Bergen and the University of Oslo.

Sigmund Grønmo (b. 1947) was Rector from 2005 to 2013. Grønmo is a professor of Sociology, with economic sociology and social science methodology as his specialties. He has held a number of important offices within research politics.
