Research Group for Burn Care and Reconstructive Surgery

Main content

According to WHO, acute burns and their resulting sequelae are among the most significant health challenges in the world. Globally, more than 200 000 people die from burn-related injuries annually. The Norwegian National Burn Center at Haukeland University Hospital in Bergen is the only burn center for major burns in Norway and opened in 1984. The Burn Center admits approximately 150 acute burns annually. The burn center is responsible for providing acute care for burns and late reconstructions for burn sequelae and runs the Norwegian Burns Registry.

The Research Group for Burn Care and Reconstructive Surgery is a cooperation between researchers at the University of Bergen and the Norwegian National Burn Center at Haukeland University Hospital.

The research group aims to develop improvements in burn care, both in the acute phase and in late reconstructions and other areas of reconstructive plastic surgery.

The research group has established academic relationships and ongoing cooperations with researchers at the University of Texas Medical Branch and the Nordic burn centers in Helsinki and Linköping.

The research group is led by Associate Professor Stian Kreken Almeland and has members from the different disciplines involved in burn care at Haukeland University Hospital.
