Study shows that asthma is associated with endometriosis in a Nordic-Baltic population
An international study conducted by Sanjay Gyawali and co-authors from the University of Bergen, Western Norway University of Applied Sciences, and Haukeland University Hospital, recently published in the Journal of Women's Health, has shown an association between asthma and asthma symptoms, and endometriosis and dysmenorrhea.

Main content
The article investigates the relationship between asthma symptoms, endometriosis, and dysmenorrhea in a Nordic-Baltic population. The study shows that women with endometriosis or dysmenorrhea have a higher prevalence of asthma and asthma-like symptoms compared to women without these conditions. The study utilized data from the Respiratory Health in Northern Europe (RHINE) study, which included 4,778 women (aged 39–65) from seven cities in the Nordic and Baltic regions.
The authors conclude that there is a significant association between asthma, asthma symptoms, and both endometriosis and dysmenorrhea. The association with dysmenorrhea was nearly as strong as with endometriosis, highlighting the need for greater attention to respiratory health issues in women with menstrual-related pain.
The findings suggest that women with endometriosis and dysmenorrhea should be monitored for potential respiratory problems, and further research should explore the mechanisms behind this association.
