Visit by the CGB Science Advisory Committee (SAC)
On May 19th 2014, three members of CGB Scientific Advisory Committee (SAC), Dr. Chris German, Dr. Frances Westall, and Dr. John Parkes, visited the Centre for Geobiology to meet with key scientific personnel and CGB board members.
Main content
The committee meets with CGB every second year in order to evaluate the centre’s scientific activities and convey their opinion about its scientific strengths and weaknesses, and also give advice regarding the long term research strategy of the centre.
Centre Director Professor Rolf Birger Pedersen presented an overview of CGB to the SAC members, including the award of 46 million Norwegian kroner from the Norwegian Research Council to fund the development of an ROV system and the 2014 establishment of the new Centre for Deep Sea Researchat UiB. . CGB senior personnel then presented their research within the respective Research Themes at the Centre before the discussion continued on exit strategies in particular.
The SAC report concludes CGB is unique in its success of drawing support from two university departments, enabling a breadth of new research to be conducted, and establishing the discipline of “Geobiology” at UiB, bringing with it a paradigm shift in thinking, understanding and approach. Several universities have now recognised the potential of this new research area, but none have yet been able to develop it as successfully as Bergen: “CGB is at the international forefront of the field”.
The SAC report will be used by CGB leadership for guidance and by the Board and the Faculty as reference information as to how well CGB is performing relative to its strategic plans.
