PhD programme at GFI
While the University of Bergen as a whole has almost ten times as many Master students compared to PhD students, the Geophysical institute (GFI) in fact hosts more PhD students than Master students.

On average, there are two PhD students for each professor at GFI. This high ratio is the result of the GFI´s strong research focus, as well as the ability to acquire external research grants (notably from the Research Council of Norway and the European Commission Framework Programmes) which fund 90% of our PhD candidates.
Usually about 50% of our PhD students come from abroad (e.g., China, England, Finland, Germany, Netherlands, Iceland, India, Iran, Italy, Russia, Spain and Sweden) and the gender ratio is very close to 50:50.
