Guidlines when applying for admission to the PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities

PhD fellows with employment at the Faculty of Humanities are automatically admitted to the PhD program as a result of their employment, and do not need to apply for admission in a separate process. All other candidates must apply for admission, and their applications will be assessed based on the criteria given in Regulations for the degree of Philosophiae Doctor (PhD) at the University of Bergen and Program Plan for the PhD degree at the Faculty of Humanities.

Main content

The admission criteria differs between the various PhD programmes, and it is important for the applicants stick to the guidelines developed for the specific programme.

First of all we kindly ask our applicants to contact the department where their PhD project belongs, to enable good support during the application process. If you do not know what department your application belongs to, please contact the faculty.

The application requires some documentation, and the digital application form requires these documents to be uploaded in a certain order to be able to proceed and complete an application. Thus it will be a good idea to collect all relevant documents before starting on the applicatioon form.

Remember to name the files according to their content. Permitted file types are pdf, jpg, txt, png and jpeg.

Tip: You may allow yourself to upload fictitious documents along the way, as long as you remember to replace them before the application is submitted. Insufficient applications may be rejected on formal grounds.

1. Information and unit

Choose faculty/department: Faculty of Humanities

Choose department: Choose the department where your academic dicipline belongs, or where you are always in dialogue with a supervisor.

2. User guidance

At University of Bergen, postgraduate education is organized with one PhD program at each faculty. As the admission criteria differs between the programs, it is important for the applicant to stick to the user guidance developed at the faculty he/she is approaching.

3. Personal data

National identity number: Norwegian  identity number (11 digits), temporary norwegian identification number/d-nummer (11 digits), or date of birth (DD.MM.YYYY)

Upload: Copy of passport. Mandatory for foreign nationals without a permanent or temporary norwegian identity number/D-number.

4. Education

The master's thesis is an important part of the basis for when it comes to admission to the PhD programme.

Title of master's thesis:

Extent of the master's thesis: enter credits/ECTS or the number of semesters

Note that the master's thesis must have an extent of at least 30 credits (ECTS) to qualify for admission, cf. PhD program at the Faculty of Humanities, University of Bergen (point 2.1.1).

Upload: summary of master's thesis (approx. two pages).

It is possible to upload several attachments. Also upload a summary of your master's thesis number two, if it is of relevance to your application.

Add education: A Norwegian master's degree or equivalent (normally an education of 3+2 years, or equivalent) within a relevant field is an absolute requirement for admission to the PhD programme. We therefore ask you to register all your academic degrees.

On special occasions, and after a special assessment, the faculty can make admissions on the basis of a minor master's degree. The degree must then be proven equivalent to a Norwegian master's degree.

Upload: diplomas, diploma supplements and transcripts.

You may also upload documentation of higher education that is not linked to any degree, if this has relevance to the doctoral programme.

In addition, upload the following attachments:

  • CV
  • translation of diplomas, diploma supplements and transcripts fro languages other than English and Scandinavian
  • If the scope of the master's thesis is not stated in the diploma or the diploma supplenet, it must be attached to a statement from the degree-granting institution that explains the scope in ECTS.
  • list of academic publications
  • relevant publications.
  • The faculty may ask you to document your knowledge of English, but it is not required to submit such documentation at this stage in the process.

5. Funding

To qualify for admission to our PhD programme, you must be able to document satisfactory funding for the entire project period. The funding must cover both living costs and expenses related to the completion of the doctoral project itself (operating funds). There is no opportunity to apply for admission for less than one year (assuming that large parts of the project have been completed), nor for more than six years. At least 50% of the working time must be reserved for work on the doctoral project.

There is no opportunity to apply for admission based on private funds.

Workplace: Name of employer and contact information/reference

Financing period: Corresponding to what is given in the documentation. In case of delayed start-up, this can be corrected.

Notes: Feel free to use this field to clarify the relationship between several funding sources.

Is the position part of a larger research project? Enter the title of the project in a separate field that appears if the answer is yes.

Upload: Employment agreement or proof of funding from all sources.

Documentation must ideal with both salary and operating funds. Operating funds are earmarked funds set aside to cover expenses directly linked to the doctoral project, i.e. expenses related to fieldwork, scientific assistance and stays abroad.

6. Project description

Category of thesis: monograph or article-based

Provisional title of the thesis: working title

The requirement for project description is formulated in the faculty's PhD programme, section 2.1.2:

  •     The application must contain a plan for the project written in line with the current template:
    •     clear description of the scientific project, including research background, main problems, theory, method, and ethical aspect where relevant
    •     timetable for implementation, with milestones and any stays abroad, which also includes the training part
    •     financing plan
  •     The application must state which language the applicant plans to use in his thesis
    •     Norwegian, English, Swedish and Danish are always approved
    •     in addition, there is room to use languages ​​that the department/centre in question can take care of in a proper way. The basic unit itself is responsible for this assessment       
    •     it is not possible to change the language in the thesis if there is less than six months until submission

Add supervisors: You are expected to name at least one one supervisor

Category of supervisor: normally this is the main supervisor

Affiliation: normally the main supervisor must be an employee at Faculty of Humanities

First name and last name:

Upload: Confirmation from supervisor stating the person is familiar with the project and willing to be take on the task of being your supervisor

Research school

It is not compulsory for our candidates to be member of a research school, so you are not supposed to ad anything here.

7. Education plan

A plan for the completion of the training part/coursework is to be included in the project description (see section 6 abow).

8. Confirm

This page shows you an overview of all registered data and upload attachments, and you can choose to go to the various pages of the application to make changes.

After you have confirmed the information to be correct (check box), choose submit to register the application. When the application has been submitted, you will receive a receipt message, giving you the opportunity to download the application.

The e-mail you are notified about in the receipt message will have the subject Forvaltningsmelding and will be sent from no-reply@uib.no. The e-mail will also contain information about who to contact with questions regarding further case management.
