Thursday and Friday last week was the annual gathering of national research schools. This year it was organized in Bergen by the research schools HySchool, BSRS, NORBARN, and INRESCOS.

Last week, HySchool helped organize the annual meetings for Research Council of Norway (NFR) and the Research School Administrator Forum at Media City Bergen. Representatives from research schools across Norway gathered to discuss and share insights on how to further develop the schools.
NFR was represented by Espen Sandøe Karlsen and John Baarli, while HySchool was represented by Assoc. Prof. Trygve Skjold and Adm. Coordinator Merry H. Navjord.
Thursday: A full-day meeting led by NFR sparked engaging discussions that continued into the evening over dinner. Research schools shared both challenges and success stories, highlighting the diversity in size, structure, and organization.
Friday: HySchool, together with BSRS, NORBARN, and INRESCOS, organized a full-day program for research school administrators.
- Solfrid Torvund Langeland delivered a hands-on crash course on how research schools can use LinkedIn to reach a wider audience.
- Ellen Hagen and Elisabeth Nesheim (UiB Ferd - Career Center for Early Stage Researchers) presented their externship program for PhD students, sparking lively discussions.
- Monica Fagerlie (INRESCOS) introduced a course on effective presentation and communication skills, showcasing how research schools can strengthen PhD training.
It was clear that these gatherings are both valuable and necessary. A big thank you to NFR and the Forum for the inspiring meetings—we look forward to helping organize next year’s gathering in Tromsø!
