Established collaboration with Offshore Norge
The Faculty of Law at UiB and Offshore Norge have entered into a knowledge collaboration to investigate the legal and economic framework for decommissioning in the petroleum industry.

«The project aims to explore obstacles and incentives in the regulations for reuse and recycling in Norway compared to Australia, the Netherlands, and the United Kingdom,» says Associate Professor Ignacio Herrera Anchustegui, at the Faculty of Law, University of Bergen (UiB).
The decommissioning of offshore oil and gas installations in Norway is expected to increase by 2030, while the industry is anticipated to reduce carbon emissions by 50 percent. Reuse and a circular economy are key measures to achieve climate goals and realize the transition to a green industry.
«The development of regulatory and market systems is crucial to succeeding in a sustainable transition,» says Herrera Anchustegui.
Based on an assessment of various practices, the project will investigate potential opportunities for the reuse of installations and coordination and multiple uses in the Norwegian context. The results will be conveyed in a knowledge report prepared in collaboration between Offshore Norge and UiB.
Work on the report begins in November 2023 after the project kickoff at the Bergen Energy and Climate Law Days conference on October 24. The report will be completed in the fall of 2024 and will be launched at an open seminar at UiB.
The project is led by Associate Professor Ignacio Herrera Anchustegui. Postdoctoral researcher Torhild Nordtveit is employed to coordinate collaboration on the report and will serve as the lead author.
Furthermore, the project has a steering group with Ignacio Herrera Anchustegui and Ingrid Birce Müftüoglu from UiB, and Anne Lise Søyland and Hazel Perrens from Offshore Norge.
