About Us:
Welcome to the Neuroimmunology and Disease Biomarkers Research Group! Our mission is to unravel the complexities of neuroimmunology and identify biomarkers that will transform the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of debilitating diseases.
Led by Professor Christian Vedeler, our group is dedicated to exploring the intersection of the nervous and immune systems to advance our understanding of neurodegenerative disorders. We focus on two key areas: Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes (PNS) and Multiple Sclerosis (MS).
Paraneoplastic Neurological Syndromes (PNS) Research Group: While there are various forms of PNS, we are focusing on the most common type called Paraneoplastic Cerebellar Degeneration (PCD). It is an immune-mediated disorder that intersects with breast or gynecological cancers and leads to a degeneration of the cerebellum resulting in a severe impairment of the motor coordination. Our researchers aim to contribute to the understanding of PCD how the immune system, designed to combat cancer, mistakenly targets components of the nervous system in this disease.
Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Research Group: In our MS research, we are interested in investigating the different forms of this complex autoimmune disease. We aim to unravel the causes of MS, where autoimmune reactions target the protective myelin sheath surrounding nerve fibers in the central nervous system, resulting in a range of neurological symptoms. With a focus on biomarker research, we aim to identify markers that enhance diagnostic precision, predict disease progression, and guide treatment decisions.
