This semester’s last CCBIO Junior Scientist Symposium took place December 8th. More than 40 researchers participated at the seminar where Professor Arild Raaheim from the Department of Education, University of Bergen, started the day with the lecture “Supervision. Challenges and possibilities”.

Mobility grant to CCBIO postdoc (12.12.2016)
Close to a billion NOK is distributed through Fripro funding this year, among other to young researchers and as mobility grants. Cancer researcher and CCBIO postdoc Agnete Engelsen at the Department of Biomedicine is one of the supported young talents.

Caroline Engen is a CCBIO PhD candidate who presented at the S.Net conference in Bergen. Her lecture was titled "Why Targeted Therapy May Not Work", and was part of the CCBIO session "The Transition from a Blockbuster Model to Personalised Cancer Therapy". We asked Caroline to walk us through a medical researcher's perspective of the conference and the use of new technologies.

Medical research student (Forskerlinjestudent) Amalie A. Svanøe was awarded with 3rd best oral presentation at joint International Congress of the International Academy of Pathology and the European Congress of Pathology, which took place in Cologne, Germany, September 25-29, 2016.

Inspirational memorial symposium (29.09.2016)
September 14th, CCBIO, the Department of Clinical Science at UiB and the Women's Clinic at Helse Bergen organized a memorial symposium for Helga B. Salvesen, the CCBIO cancer researcher who passed away in January this year. People came from far and near to be together at this scientific gathering.

Scandinavian Pathology Seminar on August 30-31 2016 (09.09.2016)
CCBIO Director Lars A. Akslen and CCBIO affiliated Arne Östman from Karolinska Institutet initiated and chaired The First Scandinavian Seminar on Translational Pathology. Approximately 50 cancer researchers gathered in the wild west of Sotra at Panorama Hotel outside of Bergen.

Reconstructive surgery might speed up return of breast cancer (09.09.2016)
A new study suggests that reconstruction of breast affects recurrence of breast cancer, and actually reduce time to relapse of the disease. The study was recently presented as front page news in the journal Breast Cancer Research and Treatment, with main author Hanna Dillekås who is PhD candidate at Professor Oddbjørn Straumes group. Straume is CCBIO PI and also last author of the study.

Repurposing drugs in the spotlight (06.09.2016)
A publication in PNAS by researchers from the Department of Clinical Science and CCBIO was selected to be highlighted in the Editors' Choice section of Science Signaling, the weekly journal from the publisher of Science magazine, and has been selected for an Editorial feature that will be published in the journal Cell Cycle.

FORNY2020 funding to the BTO project CryoIT (29.06.2016)
The BTO project CryoIT has received 10 million NOK from the Research Council of Norway’s FORNY2020 program. The project develops a new form of immunotherapy against prostate cancer, called cryoimmunotherapy, which can also be adapted to treat different types of cancer. The project belongs to Haukeland University Hospital and the University of Bergen.
