The last phase of the doctoral education

During the final phase of the doctoral education, several study and administrative tasks must be completed. The main components are: approval of the training component, thesis submission, trial lecture and public defence.

Main content

Approval of the training component

Six months before the agreement period at the PhD programme expires, the PhD candidate shall apply to the department's PhD education committee for approval of the training component. You can find a template for the application on the bottom of this page. The application must be approved by the supervisor and must contain all necessary documentation of the completed activities in the training component. If all elements have been previously approved by the department's PhD education committee, confirmation by the supervisor and documentation are not required. If some parts remain incomplete, the candidate must present a time schedule for completion of the training component.

The training component must be completed and approved when the candidate applies to submit the thesis.

Thesis submission

At least 12 weeks before the defence, the candidate must submit his doctoral thesis to the Department of Mathematics, accompanied by an Application to submit the PhD thesis. More information about the submission of the PhD thesis here.

Press release

All candidates must submit a press release in Norwegian before the defense. More information and a template are available here.

Trial lecture

The trial lecture, a requirement of the doctoral education, is held after thesis submission and latest 3 weeks before the doctoral defence. It is evaluated by a three-member committee lead by the head of the doctoral evaluation committee. The remaining two members are chosen from the departmental scientific staff.

The duration of the trial lecture is 45 minutes. The title will be announced to the candidate 2 weeks (10 workdays) in advance by the PhD coordinator. The topic of the given subject must not be obtained from the key issues in the PhD thesis. The trial lecture must be successfully completed before the defence. You can find more information about the trial lecture here.

Public defence

The final stage is the public defence of the thesis. If approved, the thesis will be defended by discussing the research findings with the opponents at a public defence. A successful defence results in the granting of the PhD degree. The diploma is issued and presented at the formal graduation ceremony.

For detailed information, candidates should stay in close contact with the leader of the doctoral evaluation committee and the administrative contact person at the department.
