Human cell metabolism is influenced by many factors in the microenvironment, including nutrients, signaling molecules and oxygen supply. In the context of human disease, changes in the cellular metabolic phenotype may indicate critical physiological threats or errors. The mitochondrial organelle serves as a major energy producer (ATP), and a critical a hub for multiple pathways that sense and coordinate cellular responses to maintain homeostasis. Our overall hypothesis is that specific metabolic changes may play a role in pathological mechanisms that potentially can be prevented or modulated by targeting metabolism. Currently, we are investigating the roles of cellular energy metabolism in cancer and Myalgic Encephalomyelitis/Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (ME/CFS).
