BioGeokjemi-lab

Main content

The Biogeochemistry Lab is used for a variety of aqueous and organic geochemistry sample preparation, analyses and experimentation. In addition to Mettler Toledo analytical and precision balances (with concrete table) for fluid/solid weighing, the laboratory is used for routine procedures such the determination of pH (combination electrode), hydrogen sulfide concentration (ion specific electrode or spectrophotometry) and Alkalinity (Metrohm Autotitrator). From 2018, high temperature and pressure experimental facilities are available using three custom-built flexible cell hydrothermal reactors (Dickson-type) rated to 350°C at 35 MPa.

The laboratory is also used for simple gas analyses (carbon dioxide, methane/light hydrocarbons, and hydrogen) using either of two SRI Model 8610 Series gas chromatographs (with TCD, FID and PDD detectors). In addition, more detailed organic analyses (quantification and identification) are possible with the suite of Agilent instruments housed in the laboratory:

Purge-and-Trap (VOA) or traditional solvent-based Gas Chromatography-Mass Spectrometry:

In 2017 a GC/FID-MS was installed (Agilent 7890B GC-FID / 5977B Series MSD) with 7693A Automatic Liquid Sampler (solvent-based samples), Cool On-Column (COC) and Multimode (MMI) Inlets, with connection to a Teledyne Tekmar Lumin Purge-and-Trap Concentrator and AQUATek 100 Autosampler (Volatile Organic Analysis (VOA)).

Purge-and-Trap (VOA) or traditional solvent-based Gas Chromatography with Sulfur-specific Detection:

In 2017 an Agilent 7890A GC with TCD-FID detection and tandem Agilent 8355 Sulfur Chemiluminescence Detector was installed.
