Travelogue from Luxembourg and Brussels.
The research group for European law has had an inspiring and enlightening trip to Luxembourg and Brussels.
Main content
The research group arrived in Luxembourg on the morning of Wednesday, November 16th. The first item on the agenda was a visit to the EFTA Court. President Páll Hreinsson welcomed us, before Legal Secretary Håvard Ormberg told us about the court and what is going on there. Afterwards, he gave us a tour. The research group then had the opportunity to introduce ourselves to the court employees, before our PhD candidates Chiara Morfea and Marte Dahl Reisæter gave presentations on their theses. The last academic item on the court's program was a presentation by Ólafur Isberg Hannesson on "Public Enforcement of EEA Internal Market Law". After the academic part, there was mingling in the court's premises, before the tour went to Cercle Munster for a lovely dinner.
The next day, a visit to the EU Court of Justice was on the agenda. The first item there was an introduction to case C-670/21 BA by one of the court's interns. The case dealt with the question of whether the German rules for valuation of real estate in third countries in connection with the calculation of inheritance tax are in line with the right to free movement of capital. After the introduction, we went to the court's largest courtroom to observe an oral hearing in the case. This gave a valuable insight into how the procedures are carried out in practice, as well as the subsequent questioning from the judges and the advocate general's side. The questioning even led to an EEA legal discussion between the judges and the parties. After the oral hearing, we had a tour of the court. During the tour, one could enjoy the court's architecture and beautiful collection of art. After the tour, we gathered in a meeting room to talk with Judge of the EU Court of Justice Siniša Rodin, and with Judge and Vice-President of the EU Court of Justice Lars Bay Larsen. They also joined us for a better lunch in one of the court's lunchrooms. Judge Jesper Svenningsen from the General Court also joined us for lunch. When lunch was over, we followed Svenningsen to a courtroom where he gave a presentation on what is happening in the General Court.
After Svenningsen's presentation, we took the train to Brussels. There, we met up with a group from ESA for an excellent dinner at the restaurant Les Petits Oignons. The travel party then rested a bit before heading to ESA on Friday morning. We were greeted by, among others, the Director of the Legal & Executive Affairs Department, Melpo-Menie Joséphidès, and Legal Adviser Erlend Leonhardsen. In addition, the Directors of the Internal Market Affairs and Competition and State Aid departments - Jónína Sigrún Lárusdóttir and Harald Evensen, respectively - were present. The program included presentations by Professors Halvard Haukeland Fredriksen, Ronny Gjendemsjø, and Christian Franklin, as well as Associate Professor Ingrid Barlund, on various topics they are currently researching. After these presentations, ESA employees gave presentations on various matters that the agency is working on. Following this, we had lunch with ESA before the travel party prepared to return home.
We would like to thank the EFTA Court, the EU Court of Justice, and ESA for an excellent professional and social program. The trip was a great success!
