Main content

The new volume ‘Visualising Language Students and Teachers as Multilinguals: Advancing Social Justice in Education’ has a contribution from one of the MoMM members.

The ‘visual turn’ in language education has broadened the scope of research methodologies to include visual and multisensory approaches that seek to unveil participants’ subjective lived experiences with multilingualism. This new volume brings together a collection of studies written by practising language teachers and teacher educators using a wide range of visual methodologies and working under the framework of social justice in language education.

In one of its chapters, André Storto, a member of MoMM research group, presents a participatory approach to research on multilingualism that addresses issues related to knowledge production, research ethics and participant engagement. The text explores how interactive data visualisations can be used to engage research participants in discussions about multilingualism, while providing them with autonomy in interpreting research findings. With regard to the potential of visual methodologies in language education, the text argues digital images are never purely ‘visual’, but rather, they engage users in a tactile-visual experience that can favour new readings of research data.

The book will be officially launched on Oct. 15th. There is a book preview available on the publisher’s website:
