Are you having doubts about whether to continue your studies? Do you need to discuss alternatives and options regarding your future as a student at The University of Bergen (UiB) and the Faculty of Social Sciences?
Terminating your studies is not your only option. We recommend that you consider possible alternatives before making a final decision:
- Talk with our student counsellors who will help you evaluate your situation
- Sammen offers courses and counselling related to jobs, choices, motivation, and goals
- Switch to a different study programme or another faculty
- Leave of absence from your studies or part-time studies

Another option is a visit to Sammen. Sammen offers individual career counselling to all students. They offer individual counselling, group therapy and a variety of courses. The services are free for students who have paid the semester fee to Sammen. Book an appointment at +47 55 96 88 44.
Change your study programme?
Students attending a one-year programme or bachelor's programme can apply for an internal transfer to certain other bachelor's programmes at the Faculty of Social Sciences. The application deadline is June 1st and November 1st. You can apply for an internal transition in Søknadsweb. Søknadsweb opens one month before the deadline.
Leave of absence?
As part of a bachelor's programme or the bachelor's part of five-year studies (integrated master’s), you have the right to take a personal leave of absence from your studies for one or two semesters. This is provided without the need for a stated reason or documentation. You must apply for documented leave for longer periods of time, or for leave with documentable reasons.
Leave of absence may suit those who need a semester or two for something other than studies. In such cases, you do not need to terminate your studies.
You also can study part-time, down to 50% of a full-time programme. This may be appropriate if taking fewer courses for a short period of time will allow you to complete your studies. The programme is extended according to the proportion and length you do part-time. Contact your student counsellor to adjust your education plan accordingly.
If you decide to terminate your studies
Fill out the online form on this site to formalize the decision to terminate your studies:
The exam and assessment registration will automatically be deleted when you have terminated your right to study.
A transcript of grades will not be sent automatically after termination of studies. You can order grades under "orders" on StudentWeb or on the diploma portal. You keep your student account/email/Mitt UiB for two months after you have left.
Please note that you must reapply for admission if you wish to study again later.
