Main content

The course in the Theory of Science and Ethics, for which the Center for the Study of the Sciences and Humanities (SVT) is responsible, is a mandatory part of the doctoral education at the Faculty of Humanities and of The Grieg Academy - Department of Music, at the Faculty of Art, Music and Design at the University of Bergen, UiB. PhD candidates can chose between either VITHF905 or VITHF900 in order to fulfill this requirement.

In 2023 the Faculty Board decided to discontinue VITHF910, and the course will only be offered to PhD candidates who started the PhD program before 20.06.2023 during an transitional period.

VITHF910 will be offered for the last time in the fall semester 2025.

Ph.D. course: VITHF910 Supervised written paper in theory of science and ethics

VITHF910 (5 ECTS) is a supplementary course to Theory of Science and Ethics VITHF905. The course gives candidates the possibility to develop a longer paper in theory of science and/ or ethics that bear directly on their field of research or Ph.D. project, in a supervised and deliberative process with representatives from the SVT and a small group of co-students.

The course is only for only open candidates who have completed VITHF905.

The course is held by The Centre for the Study of the Sciences and the Humanities (SVT) in the Spring semester.

The course is only open for Ph.D. candidates at the Faculty of Humanities and the Grieg Academy - Department of Music at the University of Bergen, UiB.

The course is in English.

  1. Paper (4000-6000 words) which discusses ethical problems and/or problems of theory of science with relevance for the candidate’s own field of research or PhD-project.
  2. Supervision of paper, individually and in discussion groups.
  3. Presentation of the paper with feedback from a representative of the SVT, and from a representative their own department.

Note that VITHF905 combined with VIT910 has the same content as VITHF900. VITHF910 gives candidates who have completed VITHF905 a chance to further develop the short papers they wrote in VITHF905 in a process with supervision and discussion. The candidate can also choose to write a new and longer paper with more direct relevance for their field of research or their dissertation.
