ASTRID GYNNILD
Principal Investigator, ViSmedia. Professor of Journalism and Media Studies in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen. Gynnild is the head of the Journalism program.
Gynnild researches visual surveillance, new technologies, and journalism innovation. She has a special interest in creativity and productivity of journalistic work processing, and explores Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).
LARS NYRE
Professor of Media Studies in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
As an experienced lecturer in new media, Nyre specializes in media design research. He collaborates with colleagues on building and testing media prototypes, and has published widely from his experiments. Nyre addresses issues relevant to the emerging paradigm of Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).
FRODE GURIBYE
Associate professor of Information Science in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
His fields of interest are technology-enhanced learning, human-computer interaction, and interaction design. Throughout his career, Guribye has been devoted to understanding the practical circumstances and implications of adopting ICT in different settings through ethnographic work and design studies.
BJØRNAR TESSEM
Professor of Information Science in the Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
His research interests include empirical studies of social relations in software development teams, support tools for software development, artificial intelligence methods such as Bayesian networks, analogical reasoning, machine learning, and semantic technologies, and mobile technologies with an emphasis on location based content in journalism.

ØYVIND VÅGNES
Associate Professor, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
In addition to his scholarly work, which earned him a nomination for a PROSE Award for his book Zaprudered: The Kennedy Assassination Film in Visual Culture (University of Texas Press, 2011), Vågnes has published four novels in his native Norwegian and has wide experience as an editor of journals and anthologies.
TURO USKALI
PhD, Head of Journalism at the Department of Communication, University of Jyväskylä, Finland.
Uskali heads several research projects focusing on innovations in journalism. Uskali has authored or coauthored seven books about the evolution of journalism and media industries. His research has been published recently in Digital Journalism, Mass Communication Educator, and The Journal of Media Innovations.
NICHOLAS DIAKOPOULOS
Assistant Professor at Northwestern University School of Communication.
He is the Director of the Computational Journalism Lab and is an Associate Professor II at the University of Bergen Department of Information Science and Media Studies. His research is in computational and data journalism with emphases on algorithmic accountability and social computing in the news.
PAUL ADAMS
Professor of Geography, University of Texas at Austin.
His research develops theoretical foundations for interdisciplinary research on communication and geography. He is currently undertaking two major projects: one applying techniques of critical cartography to maps of migration flows into Europe, the other exploring risks of tracking and surveillance associated with mobile telecommunications and location-based services.
DEBORAH JOHNSON
Professor, University of Virginia.
She is the Anne Shirley Carter Olsson Professor of Applied Ethics in the Science, Technology, and Society Program. Best known for her work on computer ethics and engineering ethics, Johnson’s research examines the ethical, social, and policy implications of technology, especially information technology.
ANJA SALZMANN
PhD, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Salzmann is a PhD fellow at the ViSmedia-project. She holds a master’s degree in Applied Media Sciences from the Ilmenau University of Technology in Germany. Salzmann has worked as a senior teacher for media courses at a Norwegian high school, and as an assistant for several research groups at the University of Bergen. She also has experience as a journalist as well as in market communication.
THOMAS WOLD
Postdoctoral researcher, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Wold holds a PhD in Safety Management and Communication in high-risk industries from the Department of Psychology at NTNU. He has also done research on young people and media behavior, pro-anorexia and journalist behavior on social media. He is currently investigating user-generated content from social media in the news and the ethical dilemmas related to visual media exposure of ordinary citizens.
ÅKE REFSDAL MOE
Special Adviser ViSmedia and Project Director at the Norwegian Board of Technology and Special Advisor at ViSmedia.
Åke Refsdal Moe is Project Director at the Norwegian Board of Technology (NBT), an independent body for technology assessment advising the Norwegian Parliament and other governmental bodies. A former researcher and lecturer on technology and society at the University of Oslo, Åke currently heads NBT’s projects on Responsible Robotics, Foresight and anticipatory processes and Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI).
HEDVIG IDÅS
Researcher, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Hedvig holds a master’s degree in Documentary and Investigative Journalism from Volda University College. In her master production she applied interactive 360-photography as a storytelling tool. Hedvig is very interested in visual aspects of journalism, especially how new technology opens up for new forms of storytelling and interactivity.
SARA PEDERSEN STENE
Research Assistant, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Sara is a former master's student in media and interaction design. She now works as a UX designer at Sbanken, the first digital bank in Norway. She is interested in user experience and interaction design, and is curious about new technology and what impact it has on our society.
MAJA VEDÅ
Research Assistant, Department of Information science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Maja is a master’s student in media science and is currently working on her thesis dealing with VG’s use of Snapchat. She is looking into how their journalism is adapting to this platform. Additionally, she is interested in how journalists navigate and operate in a journalistic snapchat world.

Maren have a bachelor’s degree in Journalism and is currently a Master’s student in Media and Communications at the University of Bergen. She also work as a digital marketer in Top of Mind AS, communications Manager at WA.works, and some freelance for the Norwegian magazines Se og Hør and KK.

JOAR MIDTUN
Former Scientific Assistant, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Joar Midtun served as a scientific assistant on ViSmedia from September 2016 through June 2017 when he was engaged in the exploration of automated facial anonymisation on the Prosopo project.Now he teaches artificial intelligence programming and focus on computer vision and machine learning, in the Master's Programme in Media and Interaction Design.
SIMEN KARLSEN
Former Scientific Assistant, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Simen Karlsen served as a scientific assistant on ViSmedia from September 2016 through June 2017 when he was engaged in the exploration of automated facial anonymisation on the Prosopo project. Simen is currently working as a data scientist in StormGeo, with advanced analysis on value data. He uses daily techniques from the ViSmedia project, such as Computer Vision and machine learning, on a daily basis..
MAGNUS EKELI MULLIS
Former Research Assistant, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Mullis is currently doing his master’s degree in Political Sociology at the London School of Economics and Political Science. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism from the University of Bergen. He has a broad range of experience from several newspapers, and has a special interest in storytelling, innovative journalism, and politics.
JOAKIM VINDENES
Former Research Assistant, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Joakim Vindenes works as a fellow at the Center for the Science of Learning and Technology (SLATE) at the University of Bergen. Research exists on the use of VR for, among other things, learning purposes. When Joakim worked at ViSmedia, he was a scientific assistant and examined the use of VR and 360 Video in journalism.
SIRI FLATLANDSMO

Siri has just finished her bachelor’s thesis in Journalism, and focused on the ethics of virtual reality in journalism. She is interested in how the use of virtual, computer-generated environments challenge established ethical principles of journalism.
DAN ERIK LINDE
Master's student, Department of Information Science and Media studies, University of Bergen.
Dan Erik is a master's student in information science and is writing his thesis on Snapchat in modern journalism. The focus will be towards the news organization TV2 and their use of the application.
CAMILLA MJØEN LIEN
Master's Student, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Camilla is currently writing her Master thesis in media science with a focus on bloggers and self-surveillance. She is also a journalist and a social media-enthusiast with great interest in how social media contributes to shaping our identity.
ANETTE DRØNEN SUNDE
Master's Student, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Anette is a master’s student in information science and is working on her thesis about visual user-generated content. She is researching how newspapers handle this type of content and is developing a tool to help media with it. Anette has a background as a graphic designer with experience in newspaper design and editing.
HILDE OTTEREN
Master's Student, Department of Information Science and Media Studies, University of Bergen.
Hilde is a master's student in media science. She is currently writing her master thesis on the use of visual imagery in online counterpublics, and is focusing on how content that is in conflict with privacy laws and human rights is positioned in the public sphere. She is also an editor of a student magazine focusing on social issues.
