The Arduous Roles of Nature and Environment in (Post)-Soviet Russia

Hovedinnhold

Nature has always played a key role in the development of Russia, in particular being a vital source of material resources for industrialization after the Bolshevik revolution. Based on the new book on (post)-Soviet forests "The Green Power of Socialism: Wood, Forest, and The Making of Soviet Industrially Embedded Ecology" (The MIT Press, 2024), the talk will trace key scholarly and public narratives of the deal with nature in the Soviet Union and post-Soviet Russia and will discuss key approaches to nature and environment among Soviet/Russian politicians, professionals, and the public.
