The Erik Østby Archaeology Stipend
Call for Applications: NIA’s Erik Østby Archaeology Stipend for 2024
Hovedinnhold
The Norwegian Institute at Athens (NIA), honoring Prof. Erik Østby for his outstanding archaeological work and his impactful contribution to the Institute, is pleased to announce one stipend for 2024 in the field of Greek Archaeology.
The Erik Østby Archaeology Stipend is offered by the NIA as an aid to Norwegian students with research topics relevant to the Archaeology of Greece. The stipend aims to support students that need to spend time in Greece to conduct research for their MA and Ph.D. Theses.
Terms: The stipend allocates 20,000 Norwegian Kroner (NOK) for the recipients to cover costs relevant to their research in Greece (library research, access to archaeological material, archaeological field trips for research purposes, and academic networking - but not for covering the cost of fieldwork in Greece). The recipients are expected to spend at least two weeks in Greece for the research purposes mentioned in the application. During their stay in Greece, the recipients will be offered office space at NIA and will be accepted into the NIA Research Affiliate Program. The recipients must return a report of their research activities following their stay in Greece and deliver a public lecture at the NIA after they complete their thesis. Please note that the stipend funding must be used within one year after the official award date.
Eligibility: MA and Ph.D. students at Norwegian Universities whose research topic is Greek Archaeology. Students researching any topic of Greek Archaeology from Prehistory to the Byzantine Times are welcome to apply for the stipend. Preference is given to applicants affiliated with the University of Bergen and the University of Oslo. Previous recipients of the NIA travel stipend are not eligible to apply.
Application Documents and Procedures: To apply, please use the link below. Application materials include a) a CV, b) digital copies of university degrees or other certificates/documents (e.g., permits to access archaeological material), c) a project description (up to 750 words double spaced; the project description document should state explicitly why the candidate needs to be in Greece for their research and the relevance of the proposed project to the Norwegian Institute and its mission in Greece), d) a brief budget (with information about any additionally received funding), and f) one reference letter submitted electronically to the NIA by the academic supervisor of the applicant (applicants are responsible for soliciting their referees).
