Why did you choose to study System Dynamics?

I got into system dynamics while diving into my art as a performance artist. I was cooking up a series about modern life's clash of culture and nature. While brainstorming, I hit roadblocks in understanding how culture evolves, especially with our consumption habits in the economic mix. Linear thinking wasn't cutting it for the real-life chaos.

That's when I stumbled upon systems thinking – it cracked open a whole new way of looking at things in my discussions. Fast forward a few years, and I was in the system dynamics master's program at UiB!

What did you study in your master's project?

In my master's thesis, I zeroed in on creative education and how systems thinking tools can be employed to teach ecology to high school students. The goal was to gauge the influence of an interactive learning setup in enhancing students' systems thinking skills and assess their learning outcomes compared to the traditional curriculum. Additionally, the study aimed to identify any hurdles in implementing this method in a classroom setting.

What is your current occupation?

I am a researcher at the Norwegian Institute for Water Research (NIVA). I am using system dynamics to explore the socio-ecological systems to help and inform transitions toward sustainability.

How is System Dynamics relevant for your work?

It holds significant relevance and serves as a fundamental method in my research.

What is your advice to new System Dynamics students?

For newcomers in the system dynamics field, I suggest not to be daunted by the numerous intensive courses and projects in the program. Instead, relish the learning process, recognizing that what you're acquiring is an analytical method applicable beyond university subjects. Broaden your scope of interest and apply the method to areas that resonate with you.
