Local CO2 Working Group

A multidisiplinary forum of researchers at the Centre for Geobiology working on different aspects of sub-seafloor CO2 storage.

Our study sites are mainly the Sleipner area in the North Sea and the Jan Mayen Vent Field in the Norwegian-Greenland Sea.

CO2 has been stored in the Utsira Formation by the Sleipner platform since 1996 and about 12 million tons of CO2 were stored there by the end of 2012.
The facility is owned and operated by Statoil.

CO2 is released to the seafloor at the Jan Mayen Vent Field and the site is therefore used as test site for equipment related to marine CO2 monitoring.
