Jan Fredrik Hovden er sosiolog, oppvaksen i Hovdebygda på Sunnmøre.
Hans akademiske arbeid handlar for det meste om korleis sosial ulikskap - og då spesielt sosiale klasseskilje - pregar norske samfunnstilhøve - og omvendt. Han har studert indre skilnadar i sosiale eliter (inkl. norske kunsteliter, politiske og administrative eliter og journalistar), sosial ulikskap i rekruttering til viktige samfunnsområde gjennom vidaregåande skule og det høgare utdanningsvesenet, og same ulikskap i befolkninga sitt tilhøve til, bruk og deltaking i samfunnet gjennom medier, kultur, og politikk. Han har også studert endringar i studentars kulturelle livsstilar gjennom over tjue år, skandinavisk innvandringsdebatt sidan 1970, gjort komparative studier av journalistar verda over gjennom deltaking i Worlds of Journalism-prosjektet, studier av nordiske journaliststudentar sine aspirasjonar og rolleforståing, drøfta kvalitetsbegrepet i kunstfeltet, studert kulturjournalistar og laga prosopografiar av utenriksjournalistar, kartlagd draumanes sosiale struktur, med meir.
Metodisk er hans arbeid vanlegvis basert på survey- og registerdata, og ulike variantar av multivariat kategorisk dataanalyse. Teoretisk er hans arbeid vanlegvis inspirert av klassisk europeisk sosiologi og fransk sosiologi, samt moderne sosiologiske arbeid om klasser og ulikskap.
Han leiar saman med Leif Ove Larsen Forskingsgruppa for journalistikk, og med Torgeir Nærland Nettverket for studier av kultur, ulikskap og demokrati, er medlem i European Center for the Study of Culture & Inequality. Han er medlem i det norske Kulturrådet og leiar for Forskingsutvalet under dette. Han har tidlegare vore styremedlem i IMER.
