Førebuingar/praktiske tips

I think Bologna is a unique place to study; not just because you're surrounded by architecture and art in a medieval Italian city, but because the city really has a very special vibe; it feels incredibly lively and free, on warm evenings the streets are bursting with students. The city is like a labyrinth and there's something new to discover on every corner. Wet winters, hot summers, friendly people and cheap coffee. For me it was an incredible and forming experience to live there 6 months; I could make new friendships and build a new network and I am actually thinking of taking a second master at the Accademia in Bologna. If you go there, you should read john berger - the red Tenda of bologna and Palandri - Boccalone; but that's just a side note ;)

ACCADEMIA The university is ancient, analogue, chaotic and free-spirited. The building is in an old church/monastery. I can recommend the school to anyone who likes to work independently and shows initiative. Teachers and students are very approachable if you are open-minded. I made lots of contacts during my time there and was allowed to take part in an exhibition and a residency. Apart from that, i really really LOVED the school and was there for at least 8 hours a day. Everyone always goes to the nearby cafes or simply under the archway in front of the uni during the breaks.

Vurdering av emnetilbodet

Erasmus students can choose from all courses and I would urge you to choose very different ones (from illustration to bronze, marble, scenography). the workshops are less modern and financed than at the KMD, but they have great workshop masters and you can learn a lot. apart from that, you don't have any studios; you are taught by an artist in the traditional way and then work in their studio. however, for example, i had a 3 x 4 metre wall to work on for the whole semester in a studio that i shared with 10 other people. all the teachers i had contact with were artists/designers themselves and were incredibly interested/dedicated to discuss my work!!!! Most classes are organised as tutorials, where you show and discuss your work (so here you also need Italian, at least to understand the teacher!) In general, just be prepared for things to be a bit different / organised differently. it can sometimes seem a bit chaotic, but with initiative and a bit of "piano piano" it's not so bad :)

Fagleg utbyte og språk

LANGUAGE all courses are in Italian; some teachers can speak English, but not all, so you should definitely start learning Italian beforehand. I took a three-week language course beforehand (you can also get this paid for by lånekassen) and then took a two-month evening course. after that I was able to communicate well. also important, because few young people speak good English, and with a little Italian you can also make contacts with the students at the university. Otherwise, like everywhere else, just be open and approach people!

Universitetsområdet og byen

ARTSCENE The art scene in bologna is similar to that of Bergen, I would say. Very chill, lots of young artists and it's relatively easy to make friends. Its less international, so I would definitely recommend taking a language course before the semester. Super great exhibitions, Venice, biennale Florence is less than two hours away by train. Many great fairs (for example the children's book fair in spring). It is very inspiring to work with all this great art around you and to be influenced by it. Super many jazz clubs, concerts, events, bars, open-air cinemas... the city is super lively and really made for students.

HOUSING Bologna is in a bit of a housing crisis when it comes to student flats, so make sure you look for them EARLY on !!!! there are also an incredible number of scam attempts, so be on your guard! I would advise you to look on facebook (there are many groups) and maybe start about 2 months in advance. student accommodation is mostly overpriced, unfortunately. try to find something within/near "murri", the city walls. You can get around inside the city walls on foot, or you can buy a second-hand bike.
