Carbonate reservoir characterization
Integrated geological, petrophysical and geophysical studies of carbonate rock outcrops improve geological and fluid-flow models of analogous subsurface reservoirs.
Hovedinnhold
Carbonate rocks are common, yet specific, pertroleum reservoirs, characterized by a unique range of features and properties. Outcrop 'analogue' studies provide crucial information on the 3D geometry and petrophysical characteristics of fluid-flow units in a selection of underground hydrocarbon play types in carbonate rocks. The geological and petrophysical data acquired from outcrops provide an important basis for the development of numerical models for upscaling of permeability in dual-porosity reservoirs as well as models for linking-up, propagation and arrest of fractures in layered carbonate reservoirs. Outcrop-based seismic modelling provides information on seismic reservoir characterization, valuable for exploration and recognition of analogous reservoir types in frontier areas. The knowledge from outcrop studies is used to develop methodological tools and workflow charts tailor-made for exploration and reservoir characterization of carbonate rocks.
