The disease mechanisms of schizophrenia remain a major enigma. Recent genome-wide association studies have lead to the finding of both common DNA variants of single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and rare genetic copy-number variants (CNVs) associated with schizophrenia. With increasing sample sizes more markers are being discovered. The potential implications of these results for the pathophysiology of schizophrenia will be discussed.
