Beyond Oil 2021: Prioritising Climate Action
Welcome to the fourth edition of the Beyond Oil Conference!
Main content
The 2021 theme is Prioritising Climate Action:
Society is inevitably moving beyond oil.
However, ambiguous targets and plans for phasing out fossil fuels are not sufficient for solving the climate emergency. Climate action must be a priority across all areas of society. We must ask ourselves what it means to prioritise climate action - for the individual, our economy, our political decisions, and our societal institutions. How can we overcome simplistic binaries between welfare and convenience on one hand, and responding to the climate emergency on the other?
How do we mobilise the societal change necessary to make prioritisation of climate action a reality?
Beyond Oil is an interdisciplinary conference organized every two years by the Centre for Climate and Energy Transformation (CET) at the University of Bergen. We provide an arena for debating how to move society beyond oil, in its broadest sense. This year's conference will dive deeper into responses to the climate emergency, considering potential synergies and trade-offs. We invite scholars from a range of disciplines to unpack and explore the role of climate change today and the potential outcomes of making climate action a top priority in the future.
There will be contributions on a range of topics, including:
- Policies and measures to prioritize climate action.
- Links between individual, institutional and societal change.
- The role of power, justice and democracy in prioritisation.
- Living well in a zero-emission society.
- The role of research and education in making climate action a priority.
- Methods of mobilization for climate action
Confirmed keynotes for the conference:
- Dr. Kimberly Nicholas, Lund University.
- Dr. Stuart Capstick, Cardiff University and Centre for Climate Change and Social Transformation (CAST Centre).
- Dr. Charles Ogunbode, University of Nottingham.
- Panel discussion with Dr. John Broome, Dr. Vigdis Vandvik and Natalia Golis.
