Renegotiating gender representation or how to remain relevant in the post-#MeToo global streaming context

Through considering the Norwegian national broadcaster NRK’s “most-watched drama series of all time” Exit (2019-2023) (Myhre 2023) as a case study, she looks at how the increasing economic and political pressure of global streaming platforms have transformed the production practices of national television broadcasters such as NRK’s. This paper also studies the impact of social movements such as #MeToo on audiovisual policies and incentives promoting gender equality on screen and on content produced by the national Norwegian television broadcaster. The methodology combines textual analysis with the qualitative analysis of expert interviews with key informants at the national funding body Norwegian Film Institute and at NRK, including producers, writers, and the heads of drama and of diversity who worked on the show Exit and beyond.
